Specialists

HealthTexas has a comprehensive specialist network, all credentialed with UnitedHealthcare. While the list is extensive, HealthTexas routinely refers to specialists based on several factors:

We highly refer to specialists who provide routine feedback to our PCPs and treat our patients as they would their own families and friends!

Below is a list of the most common specialist practices HealthTexas collaborates with to provide specialty care to our senior patients:

Referrals & Authorizations

Patients on a Medicare Advantage HMO Plan are required to obtain a referral to see a specialist. At HealthTexas, patients who need a referral will receive a printed copy at discharge to the specialist.
Understanding the difference between a Referral and an Authorization and sometimes be complicated, but at HealthTexas, this is how we define the difference.
  • Referral: a recommendation from your primary care physician (PCP) to see a specialist or receive certain medical services.
  • Authorization: the approval from your health insurance plan to receive medical services or medications. Authorizations confirm that the insurance plan will cover the cost of the service.

HealthTexas is a UnitedHealthcare (UHC) Delegate. This means we have a department that acts on behalf of UHC and has the authority to authorize referrals up to 14 business days. This department, the Central Referral Unit (CRU), currently authorize referrals within 24-36 business hours.

Many referrals that do not require an authorization. The following services, for Initial and Follow-Up Visits, do not require an authorization – but remember they always require a Referral!
